Choosing to study RMIT’s Associate Degree in Professional Writing and Editing was one of the best decisions of my life. The teachers offer a level of personal mentoring and support I’ve never experienced before, and the extensive workshopping is invaluable. In an age when student experiences can be increasingly atomised and alienated, PWE is a real and diverse community of writers. Thanks to what I learnt in the course, I’ve had my work published and now write and edit for a living.
I love the friendly environment at PWE! It abounds with support, encouragement and understanding. Being part of a collaborative cohort that shares the same writing and editing dreams is very fulfilling. Helmed by inspiring and esteemed professionals in the industry, makes this a very worthwhile journey!
Without PWE my dreams to be a published writer wouldn’t have eventuated. PWE is like family, my lecturers were more than teachers, and the program arms you with all the tools needed to succeed across multiple industries. If you want to be a writer, PWE is your first step in the right direction.
I’m actually taking a year off this year because I’ve just got my dream job as the Deputy Editor of The Big Issue Magazine, which is a job I would never have imagined getting without having done the course.

Associate Degree of Professional Writing and Editing
Professional Writing and Editing at RMIT University is a comprehensive trade school for writers and editors.
Its Associate Degree in Professional Writing and Editing (PWE) is recognised as one of the premier writing programs in Australia and provides excellent training for a wide range of editing and publishing roles.
PWE is dynamic, inspiring and industry-connected. Our writing teachers are published authors who know their craft intimately and have a passion for nurturing newer writers. Editing teachers have strong industry credentials too; they teach students the essentials and support them to cut their teeth on real-world publishing projects. Prominent and innovative players in Melbourne’s vibrant publishing scene visit our classes to share their expertise and knowledge of a fast-changing industry.
The student cohort is wonderfully diverse. While their skills, life experience and interests vary, they share a love of reading, writing and creating. During their studies they build networks and join communities that stay with them beyond the program.
At this trade school for writers and editors, students learn by doing. Writing is taught with an eye to publication and is complemented by skills in editing, professional writing and digital technologies. Students leave ready to build a sustainable freelance practice or in-house career in writing, editing or publishing.
